The CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has awarded a Gold Certification to the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) campus in Navi Mumbai under its Green Existing Campus Rating System, recognising the institute’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and environmentally responsible operations.

The plaque was presented to Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in the presence of Sashi Kishan, Director, and Yogita S. Jadhav, Registrar, NISM. The award was handed over by K.S. Venkatagiri, Executive Director of the CII Green Business Centre.

Speaking on the occasion, Pandey said sustainability has become integral to institutional development, influencing resilience, operational efficiency, and long-term value creation. He noted that the recognition reaffirmed the importance of regulatory institutions leading by example in advancing sustainable practices.

The Gold certification reflects the campus’ measurable performance across water conservation, renewable energy integration, ecological enhancement, and resource management. The institute achieved a 30% reduction in potable water consumption through water-efficient fixtures. Ecological initiatives include maintaining 53% of the site as green cover, with a tree density exceeding 35 trees per acre, supported by the use of drought-tolerant and native plant species.

Renewable energy forms a key component of the campus’ sustainability framework. A 670 kWp rooftop solar photovoltaic system supplies approximately 23% of the campus’ annual energy consumption, reducing dependence on conventional energy sources. Additionally, the campus has implemented rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge systems, ensuring 100% of runoff from roof and non-roof areas is effectively captured and reused.

Water circularity measures include the treatment and reuse of 100% of on-site wastewater, meeting landscape and flushing requirements. Advanced irrigation systems such as drip networks and pressure-regulated controls further enhance water-use efficiency.

Operational efficiency is supported by advanced monitoring systems that track energy and water consumption, with key systems including HVAC and fresh air infrastructure integrated into a Building Management System for continuous performance optimisation. The campus also promotes low-carbon mobility through pedestrian pathways and a designated bicycle network.

Beyond environmental measures, the campus prioritises occupant well-being with amenities including a gymnasium, swimming pool, yoga and meditation spaces, recreational facilities, sports infrastructure, and healthcare and security services.

C. Shekar Reddy, National Chairman of IGBC, stated that the NISM campus demonstrates how sustainability can be embedded into existing infrastructure through structured, metrics-based frameworks. Venkatagiri added that the certification reinforces Maharashtra’s position as an emerging hub for sustainable institutional infrastructure.

The Gold certification positions the NISM campus as a benchmark for sustainability in public sector and institutional campuses across India.
