The Dispute Settlement Body of the World Trade Organization has agreed to establish a panel to examine certain support measures introduced by India for its automobile and renewable energy sectors, following a complaint raised by China.
The dispute relates to incentive programmes aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing, including schemes supporting electric vehicles (EVs), advanced battery production, and renewable energy equipment. These initiatives form part of India’s broader industrial and energy transition strategy designed to scale up clean energy adoption and reduce import dependence.
According to multiple media reports, Indian officials have indicated that the measures are consistent with WTO rules and aligned with the country’s international trade commitments. The government is expected to present its position during the panel proceedings.
The establishment of a panel marks the next stage in the WTO’s dispute settlement process after consultations between the two countries did not resolve the matter. The panel will now examine submissions from both sides before issuing findings in accordance with WTO procedures.
The development comes at a time when several countries are expanding policy support for clean energy manufacturing and electric mobility, reflecting growing global competition in the energy transition space.
