Saudi Electricity Company, now operating under the name Saudi Energy, has invited bids for the construction of several 380kV substations and related overhead transmission lines across the Kingdom. The new projects are aimed at supporting the integration of upcoming renewable energy plants into the national grid. This move is part of Saudi Arabia’s long-term plan to diversify its energy mix and increase the share of clean power.
The scope of work covers the Western, Southern, and Central regions, showing the wide geographical spread of the Kingdom’s renewable energy expansion. In the Western region, the projects include the Ashayrah Wind Bulk Supply Plant (BSP), the Mozeraah Wind BSP, which also involves expansion of the existing HHR-5 facility, and the Mastura Solar Photovoltaic (PV) BSP. These developments are expected to help transmit wind and solar power generated along the coast to the main transmission network.
In the Southern region, new substations and transmission lines will support the East Al-Amoah and North Asir Wind BSPs. These projects will strengthen grid infrastructure in areas with growing renewable energy activity. In the Central region, the Tumair PV BSP, the Al-Majmaah PV BSP, and the NIFI Wind BSP are also included in the tender. Some of these developments will require expansion of existing facilities, such as Sudair and PP-11, to manage additional renewable capacity.
The tender comes after a year of strong investment in the power sector. In 2025, Saudi Energy awarded around $15 billion worth of contracts related to substations and transmission networks. The current projects are linked to the National Renewable Energy Program, led by the Ministry of Energy. Under this program, the Saudi Power Procurement Company has launched Round Seven, targeting the addition of 5,300 MW of renewable capacity.
By building new 380kV substations, Saudi Arabia is creating the infrastructure needed to manage the variable nature of wind and solar power. These high-voltage projects will ensure that electricity generated from new renewable plants can be delivered safely and reliably to consumers across the country, supporting a more sustainable energy future.
