Recent developments across the Middle East and Europe show how countries are working to expand renewable energy while also strengthening the electrical grids needed to support it. Governments and energy companies are not only focusing on building new solar and wind projects but also investing in better transmission systems and upgrading existing power plants. In Kuwait, authorities are moving ahead with important plans to expand solar power capacity. The Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects has extended the bidding deadline for the Al Dibdibah Power and Al Shagaya Renewable Energy Phase III project. This solar project will have a capacity of 500 megawatts and will form a key part of the Shagaya Renewable Energy Park. By giving project developers more time to prepare their proposals, the government aims to attract strong and competitive bids. The initiative is part of the country’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels while meeting rising electricity demand.

Alongside renewable generation, improving grid infrastructure has become equally important. In the United Arab Emirates, the cable manufacturing company Ducab has achieved a major technical milestone. The company successfully completed the region’s first Extended Pre-qualification testing for a 400 kilovolt extra-high voltage cable system. This advanced cable system can operate safely even at emergency temperatures of up to 105 degrees Celsius. The testing was carried out with support from international energy experts and demonstrates that manufacturers in the region can meet strict global technical standards. The achievement not only improves the reliability of the UAE’s domestic power grid but also strengthens the company’s ability to compete in international markets.

At the same time, energy companies are working to improve the performance of existing renewable assets. In Portugal, a partnership between Masdar and Exus Renewables is focusing on upgrading a portfolio of wind farms. The companies are repowering older wind turbines by replacing or modernizing equipment to increase efficiency and power output. In addition, they are installing solar panels at the same locations to create hybrid renewable plants. This combination of wind and solar helps produce electricity more consistently because the two sources often generate power at different times of the day.
