Green Hydrogen India Push: Government Advances National Green Hydrogen Mission

The Government of India is accelerating the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) to position India as a global hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

Under the mission, several projects have been awarded and implemented to expand green hydrogen production, manufacturing, and demand across sectors:

Key Initiatives

1. Electrolyser Manufacturing:

• 3,000 MW per annum electrolyser manufacturing capacity awarded to 15 companies, supporting domestic production of green hydrogen.

2. Green Hydrogen Production Incentives:

• 8,62,000 Metric Tonnes per Annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity has been awarded to 18 companies.

3. Green Ammonia Demand Aggregation:

• The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) discovered prices for 7,24,000 MTPA of green ammonia supply to 13 fertilizer units across the country.

4. Green Hydrogen in Refineries:

• 20,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen awarded for supply to Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum refineries.
• Additional 10,000 tonnes per annum supply allocated to Numaligarh Refinery Limited, Assam.

5. Pilot Projects and Innovation:

• Five pilot projects sanctioned for hydrogen use in the steel sector.
• V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority to develop a green methanol bunkering and refueling facility.
• Five pilot projects for 37 hydrogen-fueled vehicles and 9 hydrogen refueling stations across 10 routes nationwide.

6. City Gas Distribution (CGD) Expansion:
The government has introduced multiple measures to expand CNG/PNG networks and increase natural gas adoption, including:

• Priority allocation of domestic gas to CNG/PNG sectors and diversion from non-priority sectors.
• Expansion of the National Gas Grid Pipeline and new LNG terminals.
• Public Utility Status granted to CGD projects.
• Promotion of Bio-CNG through SATAT initiatives.
• Priority access to domestic gas from deepwater and ultra-deepwater discoveries for CNG/PNG segments.

7. Hydrogen Transport Roadmap:

• PNGRB has published a roadmap for hydrogen transportation via pipelines and blending with natural gas to facilitate efficient distribution.

The progress report was presented by Minister of State for MNRE, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, in the Rajya Sabha today, emphasizing the government’s commitment to clean energy transition, sustainable fuel adoption, and India’s leadership in the global green hydrogen market.
