The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) has successfully facilitated 26,19,879 rooftop solar (RTS) installations across India since its launch in February 2024. The scheme aims to achieve one crore rooftop solar installations in the residential sector by FY 2026-27.
Under the initiative, a total of ₹17,967.53 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to beneficiaries as of 19 March 2026. The scheme operates on a demand-driven model, allowing all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity to apply for RTS systems through the National Portal.
Key Highlights of the Scheme
- Entire process, from application to CFA disbursal, is online, with subsidies credited directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
- Technical feasibility requirements have been waived, and auto load enhancement up to 10 kW has been introduced to simplify approvals.
- Net metering agreements are integrated into the application process to streamline implementation.
- MNRE and REC Ltd., as the National Programme Implementing Agency, coordinate closely with all DISCOMs for efficient scheme execution.
- Average processing time for CFA disbursal is approximately 15 days after a consumer submits a redemption request.
