Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment, Manal Awad, held discussions with Mohamed El Araby, Managing Director of L’Oréal Egypt, to review the company’s sustainability roadmap and its alignment with national environmental priorities.

The meeting focused on advancing extended producer responsibility, enhancing environmental awareness, and strengthening environmental protection efforts. Senior officials from the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency and the Waste Management Regulatory Authority, along with company representatives, were also present.

During the discussion, Awad reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting investments in environmental and climate-related sectors. She emphasized transforming environmental challenges into economic opportunities, including job creation and income generation, as part of Egypt’s transition toward a green economy. The approach aligns with the country’s circular economy strategy, which promotes the use of agricultural waste as an industrial input.

The minister also reviewed L’Oréal Egypt’s initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and improve waste management practices. These include collaboration with packaging manufacturers using recycled plastic and efforts to achieve zero waste across production processes. She further encouraged participation in carbon credit trading and highlighted the need for public awareness campaigns to promote recycling and responsible consumer behavior.

Presenting the company’s progress, Mohamed El Araby noted that since entering the Egyptian market in 2009, L’Oréal Egypt has invested over €100 million and operates across four business segments with a portfolio of 14 global brands. The company has also implemented multiple CSR initiatives focused on sustainability, youth development, and women’s empowerment.

He highlighted that the company has achieved 100% renewable energy usage and water recycling in its production processes, while progressing toward its 2026 carbon reduction targets. Efforts to advance circular economy practices through extended producer responsibility remain a key priority.

El Araby reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainability and its intention to continue collaborating with the Egyptian government to drive environmental protection, community development, and awareness initiatives, particularly in addressing challenges such as plastic pollution.
