Ameren Missouri has completed the construction of a new electric substation in St. Louis, bringing stronger and more dependable power to a community still recovering from the May 16 tornado. The project is designed to improve everyday service while also supporting quicker restoration during severe weather events. According to Landy Wince, the Senior Director of Division Operations at Ameren Missouri, the upgrades are more than routine improvements. They represent an investment in the long-term growth and stability of St. Louis.
Reliable electricity is essential for homes, businesses, transportation systems, and rebuilding efforts after natural disasters. By reinforcing the grid, the company aims to ensure that customers receive steady and secure service throughout the year. The new substation is a major component of the company’s Smart Energy Plan—a multi-year initiative focused on improving reliability, strengthening the electric grid against storms, and modernizing outdated infrastructure across the state. This particular project brings several important benefits to the surrounding region.
One of the key advantages is its ability to support rising energy demands. This includes powering new developments such as Delmar DivINe and helping accommodate the electric fleet at the Metro Transit DeBaliviere bus garage, operated by Metro Transit. As transportation systems adopt cleaner technologies, having a dependable energy supply becomes even more essential. The substation also eases the load on two nearby substations. This improvement raises reliability for roughly 8,000 customers in the immediate area, reducing the chances of outages caused by overworked equipment. The design incorporates smart technology capable of quickly identifying power disruptions and restoring service automatically, minimizing downtime and improving response during emergencies.
To further strengthen the system, the project includes storm-hardening features. These upgrades help protect equipment from damage and speed up power restoration efforts if severe weather strikes again. Notably, the project also supports local manufacturing by using Missouri-made materials, including a transformer built in Washington by WEG Transformers USA. Throughout the planning and construction process, Ameren Missouri collaborated closely with the city, local leaders, and community organizations. This teamwork ensured that the project aligned with community priorities and supported ongoing neighborhood recovery and development. The company emphasized the importance of keeping residents informed and involved as infrastructure improvements moved forward.
Ward 10 Alderwoman Shameem Clark Hubbard expressed appreciation for this approach, noting that reliable electricity plays a vital role in rebuilding communities affected by the tornado. She highlighted that when utilities listen to residents and work toward shared goals, the results directly improve neighborhood stability and well-being. Others who have partnered with Ameren Missouri also shared positive feedback. Maxine Clark, Chief Inspirator at Delmar DivINe, said the company has supported them from the very beginning—helping plan electrical requirements, enabling solar power systems, and preparing for long-term energy needs. She emphasized that although the substation took time to plan, it will benefit the neighborhood for generations.
Ron Forrest, Chief Operating Officer of Metro Transit, added that Ameren Missouri has been a dependable partner in helping transition to a cleaner, more sustainable bus fleet. Their electric buses have already helped reduce diesel emissions by more than two million miles. With the new substation and similar upgrades, Metro Transit can continue expanding its electric fleet and further reduce environmental impact. Overall, the completion of this new substation demonstrates how targeted infrastructure investments can strengthen communities, support recovery efforts, and prepare cities for the future. By improving resilience and reliability, Ameren Missouri is helping ensure that St. Louis remains strong—not only today, but for many years to come.
