Africa Accelerates Grid Modernization And Renewable Energy Expansion Across Regions

Africa’s energy sector is seeing steady progress as several countries move ahead with large projects to improve power systems and increase the use of renewable energy. Many nations are focusing on building stronger grids, adding storage capacity, and improving regional connections to ensure a reliable electricity supply.

In West Africa, Nigeria is working on a major upgrade of its transmission network through a billion-dollar program supported by international funding. This effort is expected to make the national grid more stable and improve electricity distribution across the country. At the same time, Senegal has achieved an important financial step for a renewable energy project and is also developing a battery energy storage plant. However, the sector still faces challenges. While there is strong investment in renewable energy, some experts believe coal will still play a role in certain areas to support jobs and provide steady power, especially for mining activities. In East Africa, countries like Kenya and Uganda are exploring private investment options to improve their aging transmission systems.
