AngloGold Ashanti is taking strong steps to use cleaner energy across its mining operations in Africa. The company has set a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 30% by the year 2030. To achieve this, it is moving away from diesel and other fossil fuels and focusing on renewable energy sources like solar and grid-based power.
In Tanzania, the company has made important progress at the Geita Gold Mine. Earlier, the mine depended heavily on diesel for power, which was costly and harmful to the environment. Now, the site has been connected to the national electricity grid. Tanzaniaโs grid uses a mix of hydropower and natural gas, which is cleaner compared to diesel. This change is expected to reduce diesel use at the mine by up to 80%. It also provides a more stable and affordable power supply, helping the company improve efficiency.
In Ghana, AngloGold is working on new solar energy projects for its Iduapriem and Obuasi mines. The company is planning to use commercial and industrial solar plants to meet its energy needs. It is partnering with experienced developers who will build and operate these solar systems. The electricity generated will be supplied directly to the mining sites. This approach will help the company reduce its dependence on fuel imports and protect it from sudden changes in global oil prices.
The company has also expanded its renewable energy efforts in Egypt after acquiring the Sukari Gold Mine. This mine already has a 36 MW solar power plant along with battery storage. These systems allow the mine to store energy and use it when needed, even when sunlight is not available. AngloGold plans to further improve this setup so that more of its mining and processing work can run on clean energy.
All these efforts are part of the companyโs larger plan called the โRoadmap to Net Zero.โ This plan focuses on cutting both direct emissions from mining operations and indirect emissions from power sources. At the same time, the company is also supporting local communities. By using local suppliers and workers for these renewable projects, AngloGold is helping to create jobs and build skills in the clean energy sector.
Through these initiatives, the company is not only reducing its environmental impact but also showing how the mining industry can move toward a more sustainable future.
