Indore, known as the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh Madhya Pradesh, has already earned recognition across the country for maintaining exceptional standards of cleanliness. Now, this historic city, associated with Maa Ahilya, is taking another significant step by positioning itself as a leader in green energy and sustainable development. After achieving national excellence in sanitation through widespread public participation and effective planning, Indore is advancing steadily toward establishing itself as a major hub for clean and renewable energy.
This progress aligns with the national vision promoted by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Narendra Modi, who has consistently emphasized clean energy, environmental protection, and building a self-reliant India. Guided by these priorities and under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav Mohan Yadav, the Indore Municipal Corporation has developed a 60 MW solar power plant at Jalud, spread across 220 acres. This initiative represents far more than an energy projectโit marks a transformative shift toward making Indore self-sustaining, environmentally responsible, and future-ready.
The solar plant has been implemented under the CPSU Scheme Phase-II, Tranche-II of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Solar Energy Corporation of India Solar Energy Corporation of India. Its foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister on 24 December 2023, and the project carries a total cost of โน271.16 crore.
Construction began on 18 July 2024, executed by Rays Power Infra Limited, which is also responsible for ten years of operation and maintenance. The financial structure of the project stands out as well, as it has been supported through green bonds and viability gap funding of โน42 crore from MNRE and SECI. In addition, the plant utilizes domestically manufactured DCR-category solar modules, making it a notable example of green innovation combined with the Make in India initiative.
Through strong execution, adherence to quality standards, and efficient planning, the 60 MW solar power plant was successfully commissioned on 3 March 2026. The facility is expected to generate over 80 lakh units of electricity each month. Last month alone, the Jalud pumping station recorded savings of โน3.64 crore in electricity costs, and going forward, the monthly savings are estimated to reach around โน4.20 crore. With this consistent reduction in energy expenditure, the project cost is expected to be recovered within approximately nine years, making it both financially viable and operationally beneficial for the city.
Beyond the financial impact, the project carries major environmental benefits. It will generate nearly 86,000 carbon credits annually, significantly contributing to reducing carbon emissions. This reduction is equivalent to the environmental impact of approximately 40 lakh trees, highlighting the projectโs role in improving climate resilience and promoting ecological balance. By utilizing green bond funding and focusing on carbon reduction, the initiative strengthens Indoreโs commitment to sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.
For the Indore Municipal Corporation, the project is crucial because the city requires substantial amounts of electricity to run its water supply network, pumping systems, and various other essential services. Integrating solar power will lower dependence on traditional energy sources, reduce operational costs, and enhance the overall efficiency of municipal services. This shift toward renewable energy supports long-term urban sustainability and strengthens the cityโs infrastructure.
The successful completion of this solar project has been possible through the combined support of the Government of Madhya Pradesh and key organizations such as MPPKVVCL, MPPTCL, SLDC, MPPMCL, and CEIG. Together, these contributions have helped transform a large-scale renewable energy vision into a functioning reality. This initiative is not simply a solar installationโit is the beginning of a brighter, cleaner and more sustainable future for Indore, setting new benchmarks in innovation, development, and environmental responsibility.
