PT PLN (Persero) has officially launched its Smart & Green Building program, marking a major step toward digitalized energy management and operational sustainability across its office buildings in Indonesia.

The initiative was inaugurated at PLN Headquarters in Jakarta on May 8, where the company introduced integrated smart energy systems featuring rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, digital energy management systems, and IoT-enabled air conditioning units designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that rapid technological advancements are reshaping how buildings consume and manage electricity, requiring PLN to transition beyond its traditional role as a power supplier.

โ€œPreviously, PLNโ€™s paradigm was focused on selling electricity and optimizing costs. Today, PLN is transforming into an Energy Digital Platform that orchestrates the energy ecosystem through collaboration and value creation,โ€ Darmawan said.

He explained that emerging technologies such as rooftop solar systems, electric vehicles, and smart building automation are turning buildings and households into active participants in the energy ecosystem rather than passive consumers.

โ€œIn the future, buildings and homes will not only consume energy but also produce and manage it independently. PLN must therefore be prepared for a more digital and two-way energy ecosystem,โ€ he added.

As part of the pilot phase, PLN has equipped the Trapezoid Building at its headquarters with an 89.28-kilowatt peak (kWp) rooftop solar power system integrated with a centralized Energy Management System (EMS). The system enables real-time monitoring and optimization of building energy consumption.

PLN Independent Commissioner Andi Arief emphasized that the initiative demonstrates PLNโ€™s commitment to implementing energy efficiency practices within its own operations.

โ€œWe are an energy sales company. It would be unfair to encourage customers to support the energy transition while we continue wasting energy ourselves. PLN must become a showcase for energy efficiency,โ€ Andi stated.

He further noted that sustainability initiatives should be viewed as long-term operational investments rather than additional expenses.

โ€œSustainability is not merely an added cost, but part of the companyโ€™s efficiency strategy and future investment,โ€ he added.

Meanwhile, Executive Vice President of General Affairs and Property Assets Khairullah explained that the program is being implemented through collaboration within the PLN Group, involving PLN Icon Plus and the PLN Pension Fund under a managed service scheme.

Khairullah revealed that PLN plans to begin implementation across 10 buildings in early 2026, including the already operational Trapezoid Building.

During the initial rollout phase, PLN targets the installation of 1,100 kWp of rooftop solar capacity along with 471 IoT-based Smart AC units connected to a digital energy monitoring platform.

Looking ahead, PLN has identified approximately 400 buildings suitable for rooftop solar deployment from the companyโ€™s total portfolio of 1,300 managed buildings nationwide.

Under its 2026โ€“2035 roadmap, PLN aims to achieve 12 megawatt peak (MWp) of rooftop solar capacity, deploy 7,251 IoT Smart AC units, and contribute to carbon emission reductions of up to 0.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

The company plans to gradually expand the Smart & Green Building program across hundreds of PLN Group facilities throughout Indonesia by 2035 as part of its broader operational modernization and sustainability strategy.
