The new offering is aimed at improving project economics, strengthening grid stability and enhancing the operational performance of large-scale hybrid renewable energy plants. It combines SMA’s Medium Voltage Power Station (MVPS), the Sunny Central Storage UP-S battery inverter with grid-forming capabilities, the Sunny Central FLEX DCDC Skid, the SMA Power Plant Manager, and the company’s engineering services into an integrated hybrid power plant solution.

According to SMA, the system incorporates advanced silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET semiconductor technology in both the battery inverter and DC/DC converter, enabling conversion efficiencies of up to 99.5%. The technology is designed to reduce thermal losses, improve operational efficiency and maintain system performance during grid disturbances, contributing to greater power system resilience.

The company said the DC-coupled architecture minimizes energy conversion losses by allowing direct energy transfer between photovoltaic systems and battery storage. The configuration also enables operators to store excess solar generation, utilize curtailed energy and shift electricity delivery to periods of higher market prices, supporting improved project revenues and long-term financial performance.

The solution further incorporates advanced grid-forming functionality, allowing hybrid power plants to provide inertia, fast frequency response and transient voltage support. These capabilities are intended to enhance grid stability, particularly in weak or constrained networks, while helping developers comply with evolving grid codes in Europe and other international markets.

SMA’s Power Plant Manager provides centralized control of PV generation and battery storage assets, optimizing plant performance, grid interaction and energy dispatch throughout a project’s operational lifetime. The company’s engineering services support system planning, modelling and grid integration, enabling developers to design hybrid plants that can adapt to changing regulatory and market requirements.
