As East Africa accelerates its transition toward reliable and sustainable energy, GoodWe is strengthening its regional presence through localized solutions, strategic partnerships, and advanced solar-plus-storage technologies. In this exclusive interview, Garry Yu, Head of East Africa Region at GoodWe, shares the company’s growth strategy, market outlook, and vision for supporting the region’s clean energy ambitions.
What are the key priorities driving GoodWe’s East Africa business strategy in 2026, and which market segments offer the greatest growth opportunities?
GoodWe’s 2026 East Africa strategy rests on four priorities, all aimed at making reliable, bankable solar power the default for businesses and households on weak grids.
First, scaling localized after sales and technical capability across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia through the GoodWe Africa Solar Academy, which certifies installers and engineers, and SEMS+, our remote monitoring platform that flags and corrects issues remotely, minimizing downtime for the customer.
Second, matching the portfolio to local grid realities. Our hybrid inverters, off grid systems and scalable battery energy storage are built for the voltage instability and outages that define the region. As a BloombergNEF Tier 1 manufacturer with TÜV Rheinland certified products, ranked among the top five globally and Grade A certified in Wood Mackenzie’s 2026 inverter rankings, our reliability is independently verified, not asserted.
Third, deepening channel partnerships with distributors, EPC contractors and mini grid operators, with pricing integrity and partner protection built in.
Fourth, expanding financing cooperation with local banks and energy financiers so upfront cost becomes a structured return on investment for residential, commercial and industrial clients.
The strongest growth segments are small and medium commercial and industrial users, where hybrid solar storage offsets rising tariffs and blackout losses; rural off grid and mini grid markets, where a large share of households and small enterprises still operate without dependable grid supply, sustaining durable demand for affordable storage that tackles energy poverty; and utility scale distributed energy projects, where government electrification policy widens the long term pipeline.
As a Tier 1 manufacturer, what differentiates GoodWe from other solar and storage providers in East Africa?
Three things set us apart. First, region hardened technology: our inverters and battery systems are calibrated for fluctuating grids, power surges and high tropical temperatures, switching seamlessly between grid tied, battery and off grid modes, with an integrated energy management system that maximizes self-consumption. Second, an end-to-end local service ecosystem: year-round installer certification, regional spare parts warehouses for fast replacement, and pre and after sales engineers stationed in key markets, ensuring prompt support when customers need it most. Third, full stack integration: we develop our own inverters, battery management and energy software rather than assembling third party parts, which keeps quality consistent, pricing competitive and systems fully compatible, while our stable global capacity protects EPCs and distributors from the delivery delays common across volatile supply chains.
How is GoodWe helping commercial, industrial and residential customers address grid instability, rising costs and demand for energy independence?
We tailor solutions to each group. Residential households use compact hybrid storage that banks daytime solar for evening use and backup, switching to off grid mode within milliseconds during outages and cutting monthly bills significantly, often by more than half once a system is correctly sized. Commercial and industrial clients run high capacity hybrid inverter and lithium storage systems with intelligent load management that prioritizes solar for machinery and cooling, then draws on stored power during peak tariffs or blackouts to keep production running. For large agro processing and hospitality sites, we design scalable microgrids that can run fully off grid. Across every segment, our energy management platform tracks generation, consumption and tariff data in real time, so customers maximize self-consumption and reducing reliance on expensive grid power. The result is genuine energy resilience: stable power through blackouts, protection from tariff hikes and independence from an unreliable grid.
What is your vision for GoodWe’s growth and contribution to East Africa’s clean energy transition over the next three to five years?
Our vision pairs sustainable growth with measurable regional impact. On growth, we will establish larger regional logistics hubs and localized assembly to shorten lead times and cut cross border costs, extending our channel network across major towns and rural commercial centers in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia. We will scale cooperation with governments and independent power producers on rural mini grid electrification and utility distributed projects, and double our local technical trainers and field engineers to build a homegrown renewable energy workforce. On impact, our cost effective off grid and hybrid solutions will help governments hit rural electrification targets and displace costly diesel generation, lowering regional carbon footprints in line with national renewable energy policy. Widespread distributed storage also eases pressure on aging grids and strengthens energy security. Our long-term aim is to be East Africa’s most trusted local clean energy partner, supporting affordable, scalable and sustainable energy access for every household and enterprise across the region.
