The African Development Fund has approved a grant of $9.3 million to support a new climate resilience project that will help vulnerable communities in Ethiopia and South Sudan improve access to clean water, strengthen climate adaptation, and promote sustainable resource management. The initiative, known as the Climate Proof Water4Food Project, will focus on the Gambella region of Ethiopia and Unity State in South Sudan, where communities are increasingly affected by climate change, recurring floods, and extreme weather events.
The project is designed to address climate-related challenges that extend across national borders, encouraging cooperation between the two neighboring countries. Frequent flooding and unpredictable rainfall have damaged livelihoods, reduced agricultural productivity, and increased pressure on water resources in both regions. By adopting a shared approach, the project aims to improve resilience while supporting long-term environmental sustainability.
A major component of the initiative is the development and rehabilitation of seven solar-powered water supply systems. These renewable energy-powered facilities will provide reliable access to safe drinking water for nearly 80,000 people, reducing dependence on traditional energy sources and ensuring water services remain operational in remote communities. The use of solar energy is expected to improve the sustainability of water infrastructure while lowering operating costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Improved water access will also contribute to better public health and reduce the time spent collecting water, particularly for women and girls. New sanitation facilities will be constructed in schools and public institutions, while women-led water management committees will be established to oversee the operation and maintenance of local water resources, strengthening community participation in climate adaptation efforts.
The project also supports climate-smart agriculture as a key strategy to improve resilience against changing weather conditions. More than 100,000 farmers will receive training in sustainable farming practices, modern cultivation techniques, and the use of improved seeds that can better withstand droughts, floods, and other climate-related stresses. These measures are intended to increase agricultural productivity while helping farming communities adapt to a changing climate.
In addition, around 19,300 young people will receive practical training in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and agricultural value chains, helping create sustainable livelihoods linked to climate-resilient economic activities. The initiative also includes large-scale tree planting and watershed rehabilitation to restore degraded landscapes, improve soil quality, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen natural ecosystems.
According to the African Development Bank Group, integrating renewable energy, water security, environmental restoration, and climate-smart agriculture will help create stronger and more resilient communities. The project aims to deliver long-term environmental and social benefits while supporting sustainable development and improving the ability of vulnerable populations in Ethiopia and South Sudan to cope with the growing impacts of climate change.
