Indian Energy Exchange Reports 11.7% Growth in Q1 FY27 Consolidated Profit as Electricity Volumes Rise

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) reported an 11.7% year-on-year increase in consolidated profit after tax (PAT) for the first quarter of FY2027, supported by higher electricity trading volumes and increased activity across India’s power and gas markets.

The company reported consolidated revenue of ₹202.8 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 10.1% from ₹184.2 crore in the corresponding period last year. Consolidated PAT rose to ₹134.8 crore, while standalone PAT increased 12.1% year-on-year to ₹126.7 crore.

Electricity traded on the exchange reached 37.5 billion units (BUs) during the quarter, registering 15.9% growth compared with the first quarter of FY2026.

According to IEX, India’s power sector witnessed strong demand during the quarter as persistent heatwaves and above-normal summer temperatures pushed the country’s peak electricity demand to a record 270.8 GW in May 2026. Total electricity consumption reached 485.4 BUs during Q1 FY2027, reflecting 8.8% year-on-year growth.

On the fuel supply side, coal production stood at nearly 233 million tonnes during the quarter, supported by sufficient mine-head inventories. Coal stock at thermal power plants remained at 17 days as of June 30, enabling the sector to meet elevated summer demand.

The increase in electricity demand also supported higher prices in the power market. The average Day Ahead Market (DAM) price increased 15.7% year-on-year to ₹5.1 per unit, while the Real-Time Market (RTM) price rose 13.8% to ₹4.5 per unit.

In the gas segment, the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) traded 27.5 million MMBtu during the quarter, representing 11.9% growth over the previous year. IGX reported a 15.5% increase in profit after tax to ₹16.3 crore.

IEX also announced that Indian Gas Exchange filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) for an initial public offering (IPO) on July 14, 2026. IEX, which currently holds a 47.3% stake in IGX, plans to reduce its shareholding to 25% through an offer for sale of 22.3% equity shares in compliance with Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) regulations.

The company’s International Carbon Exchange (ICX) issued 4.24 million International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) during the quarter, compared with 4.44 million in the same period last year. Despite the lower issuance volume, ICX’s revenue increased 16.1% year-on-year to ₹2.1 crore. The exchange noted that I-RECs are globally recognized certificates representing the generation of 1 MWh of electricity from renewable energy sources.
