International solar developer ib vogt has commenced commercial electricity generation at its 99 MWp Tantangan Solar Power Plant in South Cotabato, Philippines, less than one year after the project’s groundbreaking ceremony.
The project marks ib vogt’s second solar power plant in Mindanao and its first solar-plus-storage hybrid project in Southeast Asia. Recognised as a national priority under the Philippines’ clean energy programme, the facility combines solar generation with battery energy storage to provide a dispatchable, near-baseload renewable energy solution for a region facing rising electricity demand and grid reliability challenges.
Once fully operational, the 99 MWp solar plant is expected to generate more than 150 GWh of clean electricity annually, supplying enough power for over 82,000 households while avoiding more than 66,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions each year.
“Energising this project is a special milestone for ib vogt. It is our first solar-and-storage hybrid in Southeast Asia and the first of more than 500 MW of hybrid capacity we expect to have in operation and under construction across the Philippines by the end of 2026,” said David Ludwig, Chief Executive Officer of ib vogt APAC.
The project received financing support from Pentagreen Capital and British International Investment (BII).
Marat Zapparov, Chief Executive Officer of Pentagreen Capital, said the project demonstrates how targeted financing can accelerate renewable energy deployment across ASEAN by helping developers bring large-scale projects from construction to commercial operation in a short timeframe.
Rohit Anand, Managing Director and Head of Asia Infrastructure and Climate Direct Investments at BII, said the commissioning highlights ib vogt’s ability to deliver utility-scale renewable energy projects while supporting capital mobilisation for clean energy infrastructure across Southeast Asia.
According to ib vogt, the Tantangan Solar Power Plant forms part of its broader expansion strategy in the Philippines, where the company expects to have more than 500 MW of hybrid solar and battery storage capacity either operational or under construction by the end of 2026.
