India’s renewable energy sector continued its strong growth momentum in June 2026, with clean energy generation reaching a new milestone. According to the latest data released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), renewable energy generation excluding large hydropower projects reached 36,991.39 million units (MU) during the month, registering a year-on-year growth of 24.71%.
The growth highlights the increasing contribution of renewable sources to India’s electricity mix as the country moves toward its target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Solar and wind energy remained the key drivers of renewable power generation, together contributing nearly 95.59% of total renewable electricity generation during June.
Solar power generation reached 20,307.54 MU during the month, accounting for around 54.90% of total renewable energy generation. The increase was supported by rapid expansion in utility-scale solar projects, growing rooftop solar adoption, and rising demand from commercial and industrial consumers through open-access renewable energy models.
Wind energy also achieved a significant milestone, with generation crossing 15.256 billion units (BU) for the first time. Wind power contributed approximately 41.24% of renewable electricity generation during the month. Despite seasonal variations caused by weather conditions, the sector continued to benefit from new capacity additions and ongoing investments across major wind-producing states, including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Karnataka.
India’s installed wind power capacity reached 57,443.39 MW by the end of June 2026, while solar power capacity stood at 162,151.97 MW. The continued capacity expansion reflects strong investor confidence, improved project economics, falling solar module prices, better financing availability, and supportive government policies.
Other renewable energy sources, including biomass, bagasse, and small hydro projects, contributed around 3.86% of total renewable electricity generation. Although their contribution remains smaller compared to solar and wind, these sources continue to play an important role in supporting rural energy needs, agricultural applications, and overall grid diversification.
The rapid rise in renewable generation also brings new challenges for India’s power sector. Expanding transmission infrastructure, improving grid flexibility, increasing battery energy storage deployment, ensuring financing support, and strengthening domestic renewable equipment manufacturing will be critical for future growth.
As renewable capacity expands, India will need to focus not only on adding new generation assets but also on creating a reliable and resilient energy system capable of delivering round-the-clock clean power. The June 2026 performance underlines the country’s accelerating clean energy transition and the growing importance of renewable energy in meeting future electricity demand.
