Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has issued public notices inviting suggestions and objections on applications seeking intra-state transmission licences for two major power transmission projects in Karnataka. The applications have been filed by Mekhali Power Transmission Limited and Hampapura Power Transmission Limited under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) framework.
Mekhali Power Transmission Limited, based in New Delhi, has proposed a transmission system in Belagavi district. The project includes a 2×500 MVA, 400/220/33 kV air-insulated substation (AIS) at Mekhali village in Raibag Taluk. It also involves several 400 kV and 220 kV double-circuit transmission lines using Quad Moose and Twin Zebra conductors. These lines will connect the proposed substation with Yalwar, Dhoni, Chikkodi-Mugalkhod, Kudachi, Mahalingpur and AEQUS (Hathargi) substations.
The second proposal has been submitted by Gurugram-based Hampapura Power Transmission Limited for a transmission system in Mandya district. The project proposes a 2×500 MVA, 400/220/33 kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) at Hampapura in Mandya Taluk. The network will include 400 kV double-circuit lines connecting with the Jagalur-Kadakola transmission line through a Line-In Line-Out (LILO) arrangement. It will also include 220 kV double-circuit lines connecting Hampapura with Huygonahalli, Tubinakere, Maddur and Nagamangala substations.
Both projects are targeted for completion within 24 months from their respective effective dates. Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), the state transmission utility, has recommended the grant of transmission licences for both projects. The recommendations were made in July 2026, following which KERC issued orders proposing to grant the licences.
As part of the regulatory process, KERC has made the applications, annexures and technical details available on its official website. Stakeholders, industry participants and members of the public can submit suggestions or objections to the Secretary of KERC in Bengaluru. Submissions must be supported by an affidavit and filed within 15 days from the date of the public notification. Late submissions will not be considered.
KERC has scheduled a public hearing on September 1, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Commission’s Court Hall in Bengaluru. Parties that submit valid objections or suggestions will be permitted to participate in the hearing and present their views before KERC takes a final decision on the proposed transmission licences.
