Tata Power and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have signed a Master Research Agreement (MRA) to establish a long-term strategic partnership focused on scaling and commercialising lab-scale innovations in next-generation energy technologies and advanced clean energy solutions.
The agreement brings together IIT Bombay’s research and innovation capabilities with Tata Power’s industry expertise and deployment experience to accelerate the development of scalable, industry-ready technologies supporting India’s clean energy transition and energy security.
The MRA was signed at the IIT Bombay campus by Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power, and Prof. Shrikrishna V. Kulkarni, Dean (Research & Development), IIT Bombay, in the presence of Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay.
Partnership to Focus on Advanced Energy Technologies
Under the collaboration, Tata Power and IIT Bombay will jointly work on a range of technology areas, including smart grids, power electronics, energy storage, electric mobility, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence for power systems and digital grid technologies.
The partnership will also cover emerging areas such as carbon capture and circular economy, with the objective of translating advanced research into practical solutions that can be deployed at scale.
The companies said the collaboration will help accelerate the transition of promising laboratory innovations into commercially viable technologies, while strengthening India’s domestic capabilities in critical energy technologies.
Tata Power and IIT Bombay Target Future-Ready Power Systems
Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power, said the partnership will combine IIT Bombay’s research capabilities with Tata Power’s experience in deploying energy solutions at scale.
He added that the collaboration is aimed at developing future-ready technologies that can contribute to a more resilient, secure, intelligent and sustainable power ecosystem in India.
Prof. Shireesh Kedare, Director, IIT Bombay, said India’s energy transition requires both advances in scientific research and the ability to translate those innovations into reliable and scalable technologies.
He added that the partnership will support the development of indigenous technologies that can strengthen India’s energy security, accelerate decarbonisation and contribute to a resilient power grid.
Industry-Academia Collaboration for Energy Transition
The agreement reflects the growing focus on industry-academia collaboration to accelerate research, innovation and commercialisation of technologies critical to India’s energy transition.
By combining academic research with industrial deployment expertise, Tata Power and IIT Bombay aim to create scalable clean energy solutions supporting decarbonisation, energy security and sustainable development in India.
