AMEA Power Energizes 24 MWp Ituka Solar Project Substation In Uganda

Renewable energy company AMEA Power has energized the dedicated substation for its 24 MWp Ituka solar project in Uganda’s West Nile region, marking an important step toward the plant’s full commercial operation. The activation of the 25 MVA, 132/33 kV substation enables the project to generate and transmit electricity to Uganda’s national grid.

The solar project is located on a 52-hectare site in Ombachi village in the Madi Okollo District, around 450 kilometers from Kampala. Developed through AMEA Power’s local subsidiary, Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, the facility is the first and largest utility-scale, grid-connected solar photovoltaic project in Uganda’s West Nile region.

The substation will connect the solar plant to the Lira-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua 132 kV transmission line, operated by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited. The company is also the project’s official off-taker under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

The project has received a USD 19 million debt package from the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund. Payment guarantees have also been provided by the African Trade and Investment Development Insurance under its Regional Liquidity Support Facility, supporting the project’s financial stability.

Once fully commissioned, the solar plant is expected to produce about 53,940 MWh of clean electricity annually. The generation is projected to provide electricity to more than 190,000 households and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 26,600 tonnes every year.

In addition to improving electricity access, AMEA Power is implementing community development initiatives around the project. These programs include education support, local skills training and initiatives promoting gender equality, with the aim of creating long-term social and economic benefits for communities in the West Nile region.
