The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has deactivated 66 registered vendors under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana for one month due to a large backlog of pending rooftop solar applications.
The action followed an analysis of portal data for the April-June 2026 quarter. MNRE found that the affected vendors had accumulated an unusually high number of applications listed as “Agreement Uploaded.” In several cases, the number of pending applications was much higher than the vendors’ actual capacity to complete installations. The ministry described this practice as “artificial hoarding,” warning that it limits consumer choice and delays subsidy payments.
During the deactivation period, the vendors cannot accept new consumer applications, and their names have been temporarily removed from the portal’s vendor-selection page. However, they will retain portal access to complete installations for customers with whom agreements have already been signed.
MNRE has provided the affected vendors with a 30-day period to reduce their backlog and improve installation timelines. Vendors that demonstrate sufficient improvement may be reactivated after the review period. Those that fail to make adequate progress could face an extension of the deactivation.
The ministry has also advised all registered vendors to avoid keeping consumer applications pending for more than 60 days without a valid reason. Vendors have been directed to accept applications according to their actual execution and installation capacity.
The action comes as the PM Surya Ghar scheme approaches its scheduled conclusion, with less than nine months remaining. Through the crackdown, MNRE aims to improve project execution, protect consumers from unnecessary delays, speed up rooftop solar adoption and ensure faster distribution of government subsidies.
