Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has signed a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to procure 50 MW of solar power along with battery energy storage for Chandigarh.
The agreement is expected to provide around 135 million units (MUs) of electricity annually, while supporting the city’s growing demand for reliable and renewable power. The solar power will primarily meet electricity requirements during the daytime, while the battery energy storage system will store surplus electricity and supply power during nighttime and other periods when solar generation is unavailable.
The PPA has been signed under SECI’s Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) Tranche XX. The ISTS network enables electricity generated in one part of the country to be transmitted to consumers in another region through the national transmission grid.
The agreement will enable Chandigarh to receive its first solar power connected through the ISTS network, marking a step toward increasing renewable energy use in the city and diversifying its electricity supply.
The solar-plus-storage arrangement is also expected to provide CPDL with greater flexibility in managing fluctuations in electricity demand while improving the reliability of renewable power supply to consumers.
