Vedanta Aluminium is preparing to meet growing demand for specialised aluminium products from India’s power transmission sector as the country accelerates investments in transmission infrastructure to integrate increasing renewable energy capacity.
The company said the expansion of India’s transmission network will require application-specific aluminium grades offering different combinations of strength, conductivity, and corrosion resistance, depending on terrain and operating conditions.
According to ICRA’s June 2026 assessment cited by Vedanta Aluminium, India could see ₹5–6 trillion in transmission investments between FY2027 and FY2032. This forms part of the broader National Electricity Plan (2023–2032), which envisages more than ₹9.15 lakh crore in transmission expenditure.
The planned investments are expected to increase India’s transmission line length to around 6,27,000 circuit kilometres and substation capacity to approximately 2,171 GVA by March 2030. The Central Electricity Authority is also targeting nearly 900 GW of non-fossil capacity by FY2036, with renewable generation requiring high-voltage transmission corridors to connect resource-rich regions with demand centres.
Aluminium is widely used in overhead transmission lines and as wire rods for conductors and cables due to its lower weight compared with copper, conductivity, and suitability for long-span applications.
ICRA estimates that around 54.8 GW of commissioned renewable capacity remained on temporary grid access as of 22 May 2026, with renewable generators in northern and western India facing curtailment due to transmission constraints.
As the transmission network expands across river crossings, coastal regions, hilly terrain, and long renewable power evacuation corridors, demand is expected to increase for specialised aluminium grades suited to different operating environments.
Vedanta Aluminium, which has an installed production capacity of around 2.4 million tonnes, has expanded its downstream portfolio to address these requirements. Its product range includes 6201 alloy for high-strength and low-sag applications, including river crossings and difficult terrain; AL59 for applications requiring corrosion resistance in coastal and industrial environments; and 1350 and 1370 grades for high-conductivity applications such as standard conductors, transformer windings, and substation busbars.
The company is also among the world’s largest producers of aluminium wire rods, which are used across conductors, transformers, and substations.
The expansion of substations is expected to provide an additional source of aluminium demand. ICRA estimates that India could add approximately 100 GVA of substation capacity annually through March 2030, compared with around 90 GVA in recent years. Transformers and busbars also require high-conductivity aluminium rod.
According to the Ministry of Mines’ aluminium vision document cited by Vedanta Aluminium, electrical-sector aluminium consumption is projected to increase from approximately 2.4 million tonnes in FY2024 to 4 million tonnes by FY2030 and 12.9 million tonnes by FY2047.
The projected growth highlights the increasing role of aluminium in supporting India’s power transmission infrastructure and renewable energy integration, alongside its established applications in sectors such as construction and automobiles.
