Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has completed its 12-day public awareness campaign, “Experience Khareef, Embrace Safety,” aimed at improving public safety around high-voltage electricity transmission infrastructure in Dhofar Governorate. The campaign was conducted from August 24 to September 4, 2026, during the Khareef season, when the region attracts a large number of residents and tourists.
The initiative focused on educating the public about safe behavior near electricity transmission towers and lines. OETC highlighted several activities that can create serious electrical hazards, including camping, sitting or gathering directly beneath transmission lines, and constructing temporary or permanent structures within electricity rights-of-way.
The company also warned against flying kites and drones close to transmission infrastructure, as these activities can create risks for both individuals and the electricity network. OETC further advised the public against placing beehives under transmission towers and urged residents and visitors to maintain a safe distance from electrical equipment.
To reach a wider audience, OETC used a combination of digital communication and direct public engagement. More than 15 dedicated social media posts were published during the campaign, generating over 69,000 views and engagements. The company also distributed SMS messages containing visual safety guidance to approximately 15,000 people across the region.
As part of its on-ground outreach, OETC organized an interactive educational booth at Salalah Gardens Mall. The booth attracted more than 1,060 visitors and provided an opportunity for members of the public to interact directly with technical specialists. Visitors participated in question-and-answer sessions and competitions designed to communicate electrical safety information in an accessible and engaging manner.
Eng. Salim Al Zubaidi, General Manager of the Transmission Department in Dhofar, said that proactive public education remains an important measure for preventing electrical accidents. He highlighted the strong participation and interest shown by both community members and visitors during the campaign.
The company said the response demonstrated the importance of continued public engagement, particularly during periods of increased tourism and outdoor activity. OETC also reaffirmed its commitment, under Nama Group, to supporting a secure, reliable and sustainable national electricity transmission network.
The company urged residents, tourists and other members of the public to comply with safety requirements issued by the relevant authorities and to remain alert when visiting areas located near electricity transmission infrastructure.
