NTPC Limited has terminated the contract awarded to GR Infraprojects Limited (GRIL) for the development of a 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra.
The contract, awarded in March 2026, had a total value of ₹413.37 crore and was scheduled to be completed within 15 months. According to NTPC, the project experienced significant delays in critical activities, resulting in insufficient progress against the contractual requirements.
NTPC said it had issued a contractual notice to GRIL seeking immediate corrective action. However, the contractor did not undertake the required remedial measures, following which NTPC terminated the contract with immediate effect.
In accordance with the contractual provisions, NTPC has also encashed available securities amounting to approximately ₹91 crore following the termination.
The Mouda BESS project is intended to strengthen grid flexibility and support the integration of renewable energy into the power system. NTPC said it has initiated the process of re-tendering the project at the risk and cost of GRIL, as permitted under the applicable contractual provisions.
The company is taking measures to facilitate the early re-award of the project and support its timely implementation.
The Mouda BESS project forms part of NTPC’s broader efforts to deploy battery energy storage systems alongside its conventional generation assets. The company is pursuing BESS projects across multiple locations as energy storage becomes increasingly important for balancing a power system with a growing share of renewable energy.
