Maruti Suzuki India has commissioned a 300 kW green hydrogen (GH₂) electrolyzer plant on a pilot basis at its manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana. The green hydrogen produced at the facility will be blended with natural gas and used as process fuel in manufacturing operations.
The pilot plant is designed to utilise surplus solar power generated at the Manesar facility. Solar electricity produced during holidays, when manufacturing demand is lower, will be used to generate green hydrogen. The hydrogen will then be stored and deployed in manufacturing processes.
Maruti Suzuki said the pilot will provide operational learnings for the potential expansion of green hydrogen technology across its manufacturing facilities in Haryana and Gujarat.
Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, said the company is pursuing multiple renewable energy solutions for its manufacturing operations. He added that the 300 kW green hydrogen project is aligned with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, alongside the company’s investments in solar power, biogas and battery energy storage.
The company is targeting a reduction in the carbon footprint of its manufacturing operations from approximately 615,000 tonnes to 266,000 tonnes by FY2030-31, according to the announcement.
Maruti Suzuki Expands Clean Energy Portfolio
The green hydrogen pilot forms part of Maruti Suzuki’s broader efforts to reduce emissions from its manufacturing operations. The company has been deploying in-house solar power generation, renewable power procurement and long-term power purchase agreements for solar and wind energy.
Maruti Suzuki is also in the advanced stages of establishing a 10 tonnes per day (TPD) biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility, which is scheduled for commissioning during FY2026-27.
The company has additionally commissioned a 1 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Kharkhoda facility and has started using compressed biogas (CBG) as a process fuel.
The company’s board has approved four CBG projects with an investment allocation of ₹561 crore. Separately, Suzuki Motor Corporation, in partnership with the National Dairy Development Board and dairy industry organisations, plans to establish 10 biogas plants across India, with three already operational in Gujarat.
The commissioning of the Manesar green hydrogen electrolyzer adds another clean-energy technology to Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing operations as the company works to reduce process emissions and improve energy efficiency.
