India and the European Union discussed strengthening cooperation in the power and energy sectors during a bilateral meeting held in New Delhi on September 24, 2026.
Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Naik met a delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) to review ongoing cooperation and explore new areas of collaboration.
The discussions covered energy security, power sector transformation, low-carbon development, nuclear energy, carbon markets and emerging technologies. Both sides also discussed the broader momentum in India-EU relations, including progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
Shri Shripad Naik highlighted India’s ongoing transformation of its power sector and efforts to develop a resilient, reliable and future-ready energy system. He pointed to the country’s expansion of non-fossil fuel capacity and progress towards its climate commitments ahead of the targeted timeline.
The Minister also highlighted developments in transmission and distribution infrastructure, energy storage, smart-grid technologies, nuclear energy, energy efficiency and green hydrogen.
The meeting explored opportunities for greater cooperation in emerging technologies. These included long-duration energy storage, digital power-system technologies, green hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), and nuclear technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Carbon markets and the evolving global carbon-pricing framework were also discussed. The two sides exchanged views on the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its implications for international trade and energy-intensive industries.
The discussions also focused on sharing expertise, technology and institutional knowledge between India and the European Union. Both sides recognised the importance of continued engagement to support the development of secure, resilient and sustainable energy systems.
The meeting reaffirmed energy and power cooperation as an important component of the India-EU partnership, with both sides expressing their commitment to deeper technological and institutional collaboration across emerging and strategic areas of the energy sector.
