Statkraft and Greenvolt Power have signed a 10-year tolling agreement covering 400 MW / 1,600 MWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity in Poland, marking Statkraft’s first large-scale BESS contract in the Polish market.
The agreement, described by the companies as the largest publicly communicated BESS tolling transaction in the European Union to date, covers two four-hour battery storage projects: Ełk and Turośń Kościelna.
Each project will have a capacity of 200 MW / 800 MWh. The Ełk facility will be located in Nowa Wieś Ełcka, while the Turośń Kościelna project will be developed in Turośń Kościelna.
Under the tolling structure, Statkraft will have the right to determine when the batteries charge and discharge across electricity and flexibility markets. Greenvolt Power, meanwhile, will receive an additional source of predictable, long-term revenue alongside income already secured through Poland’s Capacity Market.
Kornel Koronowski, Head of Origination Poland at Statkraft, said the transaction reflects the company’s ambitions in Poland and complements its portfolio of third-party wind and solar assets. He added that Statkraft intends to use the expanded portfolio to offer competitive and stable energy prices to energy-intensive customers.
Łukasz Zagórski, Business Origination and Market Regulation Director at Greenvolt Power, said the agreement brings market optimisation capabilities to the projects, allowing battery flexibility to be monetised across multiple power markets while creating additional revenue opportunities.
Battery Storage to Support Poland’s Renewable Energy Expansion
The projects are expected to contribute to the flexibility of Poland’s electricity system as the country integrates increasing volumes of wind and solar generation.
Utility-scale batteries can absorb surplus electricity during periods of high renewable generation and discharge power when demand rises. This can help balance electricity supply and demand, support grid stability and enable additional renewable capacity to connect to the power system.
The partnership combines Greenvolt Power’s utility-scale project development capabilities with Statkraft’s electricity market and risk-management expertise.
Long-term tolling arrangements can also provide battery projects with greater revenue visibility, which can support project financing and facilitate investment in large-scale energy storage infrastructure.
The transaction follows other major commercial agreements completed by Statkraft in Poland, including what the company describes as the country’s largest corporate power purchase agreement and its first subsidy-free utility-based solar PPA.
The latest agreement highlights the expanding role of BESS and long-term commercial structures in Poland’s power market, as greater renewable penetration increases demand for flexible resources capable of balancing the electricity system.
