BNZ Consolidates 49 MWp Gemunde Solar Plant Operations in Portugal

Independent power producer BNZ has announced the full-capacity operational consolidation of the 49 MWp Gemunde solar photovoltaic plant in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Braga district, Portugal. The project was BNZ’s first operational solar plant in the country and represents a key step in the company’s expansion strategy in the Portuguese renewable energy market.

The Gemunde plant is expected to generate approximately 78,400 MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to supply more than 14,000 people. The project is estimated to avoid around 30,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Construction of the project also generated approximately 370 direct and indirect jobs, contributing to economic activity in the surrounding region.

GRS, the solar and storage engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor of Grupo Gransolar, served as a strategic partner during the construction of the facility. The company supported the project’s development and implementation, including work to optimise plant performance and meet quality and safety requirements.

Luis Selva, CEO of BNZ, said the operational consolidation of Gemunde represents an important milestone for the company in Portugal and reflects its focus on developing renewable energy infrastructure while creating value for local communities.

BNZ Plans EUR 600 Million Investment in Portugal

Portugal remains a strategic market for BNZ, with the company planning to invest up to EUR 600 million in the country to commission nine solar plants.

The Gemunde project forms part of this portfolio, alongside the recently inaugurated 28 MWp Muro photovoltaic plant in Trofa, Porto.

BNZ is also planning to integrate battery energy storage into its renewable energy portfolio. The company aims to deploy 150 MW of battery storage capacity, including 60 MW in northern Portugal.

The storage capacity is expected to provide additional flexibility to the electricity system, support the integration of renewable generation and contribute to grid stability.

Environmental and Community Initiatives

BNZ said its projects incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) measures designed to support local communities and ecosystems.

At the Gemunde plant, environmental measures include the conservation of cork oak forests, restoration of green areas and rehabilitation of local natural heritage.

The company is also supporting community and sports initiatives while promoting the protection and use of local natural areas for educational and visitor activities.

BNZ said it plans to continue developing renewable generation and energy storage infrastructure in Portugal as part of its wider strategy to support the country’s energy transition and energy independence.
