Trina Storage, the energy storage division of Trinasolar, has secured a contract to supply a 50 MW/196 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) for the AEJ Nozu project in Oita Prefecture, Japan, strengthening its presence in the country’s expanding utility-scale energy storage market.
The project, located in Nishihata, Nozu Town, Usuki City, was awarded under Japan’s FY2023 Long-Term Decarbonization Auction and is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2028. Under the agreement, Trina Storage will deploy its Elementa 2 Pro 5 MWh battery energy storage solution to support the project’s energy storage requirements.
The AEJ Nozu project represents another addition to Trina Storage’s growing portfolio in Japan, where demand for grid-scale battery storage is increasing alongside renewable energy deployment. The company has been expanding its local operational capabilities to support project development, system configuration, technical consultation, delivery coordination and after-sales services.
Through its Japan-based team, Trina Storage works with customers and project partners to address local technical specifications and project requirements throughout the development and operational lifecycle. These capabilities are supported by the company’s global expertise in battery cell technology, system integration and utility-scale energy storage solutions.
Commenting on the development, Dr. Leo Zhao, Head of Energy Storage (APAC) at Trina Storage, said the company was pleased to contribute to Japan’s expanding renewable energy portfolio through the AEJ Nozu project. He highlighted the opportunities emerging from Japan’s evolving energy requirements and emphasized the importance of combining advanced storage technology with strong local support capabilities.
In addition to the Nozu project, Trina Storage is supplying a 160 MWh utility-scale battery energy storage project in Japan’s Kyushu region, further expanding its presence in the market.
The company also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with AMP-lify in September for approximately 1 GWh of grid-connected battery energy storage projects across Japan. The proposed projects will feature Trina Storage’s latest Elementa 3 series energy storage technology.
These developments reflect Trina Storage’s continued expansion in Japan’s energy storage sector as the country increases investment in grid flexibility, renewable energy integration and long-duration energy storage infrastructure.
With the addition of the AEJ Nozu project and its expanding pipeline of storage developments, Trina Storage is positioning itself to support Japan’s transition toward a more flexible and decarbonized electricity system.
