U Mobile, Malaysia’s 5G network provider, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HLGY Energy Sdn Bhd to explore the development of next-generation smart solar farm solutions using its ULTRA5G network. The collaboration aims to integrate private 5G connectivity, artificial intelligence (AI) and industrial automation to improve the monitoring, management and operational efficiency of solar power plants.
HLGY Energy is a Malaysian renewable energy developer focused on developing and operating utility-scale solar projects and integrated energy solutions under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS). Its projects include the Kedah Rubber City Solar Power Plant.
Under the agreement, the two companies will explore deploying a private 5G network to serve as the digital infrastructure for smart solar farm operations. U Mobile will act as HLGY Energy’s innovation, automation and communications infrastructure provider, supporting the adoption of advanced digital technologies across its renewable energy assets.
The proposed network will provide dedicated, secure and reliable connectivity for applications such as autonomous drone inspections, AI-powered analytics and smart closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance. These technologies are expected to enable remote monitoring of solar facilities, improve the early detection of operational issues and support faster responses to maintenance requirements.
The collaboration forms part of U Mobile’s enterprise growth strategy, which focuses on applying its ULTRA5G network capabilities to industries undergoing digital transformation. The company said its network capabilities have received independent recognition from Ookla and Opensignal for speed and availability.
How Lih Ren, Chief Business Officer of U Mobile, said the partnership would demonstrate how 5G connectivity, AI and industrial automation could support the development of safer, more efficient and increasingly autonomous renewable energy infrastructure. He added that the company aims to become a trusted digital solutions partner for enterprises across Malaysia while supporting the country’s renewable energy ambitions under CRESS.
Kenneth Yap, Chairman and Executive Director of HLGY Energy, said the collaboration would combine solar energy expertise with private 5G connectivity to explore improvements in the operation and management of renewable energy assets.
He highlighted the potential of integrating AI with solar generation and battery energy storage system (BESS) operations. According to Yap, these technologies could help optimise energy storage and supply schedules, reduce electricity costs and extend equipment life.
The initiative also supports HLGY Energy’s longer-term renewable energy development plans and its participation in CRESS. The scheme is intended to support renewable electricity supply arrangements for businesses seeking to increase their use of clean energy.
The partnership reflects the growing convergence of telecommunications and renewable energy infrastructure in Malaysia. By combining advanced connectivity with intelligent monitoring and automation, the companies aim to explore solutions that improve solar farm performance and support industrial decarbonisation.
