The Indian stock market closed lower on October 22, 2026, as benchmark indices recorded losses amid cautious investor sentiment. The S&P BSE Sensex declined 0.62% to close at 73,249.39, while the Nifty 50 fell 0.63% to settle at 22,667.25. Green energy and related stocks witnessed mixed trading, with a few companies recording gains while several renewable energy and power sector counters faced selling pressure.
Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) emerged among the notable gainers, rising 1.50% on the BSE to ₹104.90. On the NSE, the stock advanced 0.99%. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) also moved higher, gaining 0.89% on the BSE to close at ₹130.50. Tata Power shares increased 0.71% to ₹353.50, while GAIL advanced 0.72% to ₹167.90. NTPC Green Energy recorded a marginal gain of 0.27%, trading at ₹84.22 on the BSE.
However, several stocks across the renewable energy and associated sectors ended the session in negative territory. Kabra Extrusion emerged among the major losers, declining 4.61% on the BSE to ₹700.10 and falling 3.84% on the NSE. Juniper Green Energy registered a 5.34% decline on the NSE, closing at ₹248.95. Borosil Renewables fell 2.27% to ₹397.35, while Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy declined 2.82% to ₹148.15. These movements reflected the weak performance across several segments of the clean energy market.
Major energy companies and infrastructure stocks also remained under pressure. Reliance Industries declined 2.59% on the BSE to ₹1,176.00, while Larsen & Toubro slipped 0.83% to ₹3,600.00. Adani Green Energy shares fell 0.76% to ₹1,248.00, and JSW Energy declined 1.72% to ₹464.10.
Other companies, including Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, Inox Wind, Olectra Greentech and Praj Industries, also recorded modest losses during the session.
The trading session highlighted divergent movements within India’s renewable energy and power sectors. While selected energy-related stocks attracted buying interest, declines across several prominent companies accompanied the broader market weakness. Investors continued to assess prevailing market conditions, with individual stock performance varying across the sector.
