WUC Invites EOI for Floating Solar Projects Across Reservoirs And Dams In Botswana

The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) has announced plans to develop floating solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across key water reservoirs and dams as part of its efforts to expand renewable energy adoption and promote sustainable water resource management. The initiative aims to integrate clean energy generation into existing water infrastructure while improving resource efficiency and reducing environmental impacts.

As an initial step towards implementing the project, WUC has invited expressions of interest (EOI) from qualified and experienced companies operating in the renewable energy sector. The corporation is seeking competent firms capable of delivering floating solar projects through a comprehensive development and implementation approach. Selected partners are expected to undertake project design, structural development, installation, and eventual operation of the floating solar photovoltaic systems.

The proposed installations will utilize available water surfaces at reservoirs and dams to generate renewable electricity without requiring additional land. Floating solar technology offers several advantages, particularly in regions where land availability and competing land-use requirements can create challenges for large-scale solar development.

In addition to generating clean electricity, the floating solar installations could help reduce water evaporation by providing shade over reservoir surfaces. This feature is particularly beneficial in areas facing water scarcity, rising temperatures, and increasing pressure on freshwater resources. The technology can also support more efficient utilization of existing infrastructure while contributing to broader clean energy objectives.

The electricity generated through these systems is expected to support energy requirements associated with water utility operations, although specific details regarding the intended power utilization have not yet been disclosed.

WUC is expected to provide further information as the procurement process progresses. Details regarding project locations, proposed generation capacities, implementation schedules, investment requirements, and technical specifications are yet to be announced.

The initiative represents an important step towards exploring innovative renewable energy solutions within public utility infrastructure. By combining solar power generation with water resource management, WUC aims to advance sustainable development, optimize land utilization, and strengthen climate resilience through clean energy technologies.
