The union cabinet had approved the PLI scheme for manufacture of high efficiency solar photovoltaic module. The โ‚น4,500 crore PLI scheme for solar photo voltaic modules will help India ramp up its domestic manufacturing capacity. The scheme is expected to add 10-gigawatt (GW) capacity of integrated solar photo voltaic manufacturing plants and bring direct investment of around โ‚น17,200 crore.

The federal government is anticipating a grand response to the programme with bids at nearly four times the 10 GW tender.

A senior government official said large companies are evincing interest and are expected to commit end-to-end solar manufacturing. “We can accommodate maximum 10 GW. Many players are committing to set up fully integrated plant from polysilicon to module against our expectations of beginning with wafers to modules,” the official said.
