Signet Terrace Shopping Centre has announced the successful commissioning of its state-of-the-art solar power plant, marking a significant milestone in their commitment to sustainable energy practices and carbon footprint reduction. This groundbreaking initiative is the result of a collaborative effort between Signet Terrace Shopping Centre, Solarise Africa, Nuvo Energy Africa, and One Stop Solar, each playing a crucial role in the project’s implementation.

With a remarkable capacity of 975.7 kWp solar PV, the Signet Terrace Shopping Centre solar power plant solidifies its position as a frontrunner in renewable energy solutions within the retail industry. By embracing clean energy sources, the shopping centre is expected to achieve a notable 66% reduction in kilowatt-hour (kWh) consumption throughout the plant’s lifespan, making a substantial contribution to a greener future. In fact, the plant is projected to achieve an impressive 30% reduction in kWh usage in its very first month, setting a remarkable example for other shopping centres to emulate.

Kavi Naidoo, the spokesperson for Signet Terrace Shopping Centre, expressed their excitement about the project, emphasizing their commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices. The solar power plant enables the shopping centre to generate a significant portion of its electricity needs from renewable sources, resulting in both a reduced carbon footprint and long-term cost savings.

In line with their focus on green energy, the solar installation also includes a 22kW Enelion Vertica EV Charger that powers two electric vehicle (EV) charging bays. This addition further showcases the shopping centre’s dedication to sustainable transportation options and provides convenient solutions for EV owners visiting the premises.

The project’s financing perspective was emphasized by Sakkie van Wijk, Co-Founder and COO of Solarise Africa, who highlighted its feasibility and financial viability for commercial properties. With the solar power plant replacing 29% of the shopping centre’s electricity consumption, it is expected to contribute to a reduction of approximately 32,720 tons of CO2 emissions over the contract period, making a substantial impact on climate change mitigation.

Jan-Hendrik Kruger, Managing Director of Nuvo Energy Africa, praised the construction process, underscoring the meticulous planning, cutting-edge technology, and strong commitment to environmental sustainability involved in bringing the solar power plant to life. This installation serves as an exemplary model for other developers seeking to integrate renewable energy solutions into their projects.
