In a momentous stride towards sustainable energy development, the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The signing ceremony, held in Itanagar, solidified the shared commitment to propel the growth of 2620 MW hydroelectric projects.
Marking a decisive push towards India’s renewable energy goals, these hydro projects are poised to be instrumental in the country’s green energy agenda, in alignment with the ambitious targets outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The NDC aspires to amass a formidable 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, and the substantial input from these hydroelectric ventures is anticipated to significantly curtail India’s carbon footprint. This move also serves to expedite the trajectory toward accomplishing Net Zero carbon emissions by the year 2070.
Beyond their undeniable environmental merits, these hydro projects hold the promise of substantial regional economic progress. Foreseen to generate a plethora of employment opportunities, they are expected to infuse vitality into the local economy, bolstering skills and technical prowess among the local populace.
With this MoA now in effect, the concerted efforts of NEEPCO and the Arunachal Pradesh Government stand as a testament to a collaborative drive that capitalizes on the immense potential of hydroelectric power. This cooperative endeavor not only taps into the bounteous energy resources but also steers India towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy future.
