Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has revealed plans for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the commencement of the 10 Megawatt Salima Solar Power Project. Set to take place on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at Nanjoka in Salima district, the event will be honored by the presence of the Minister of Energy, Honourable Ibrahim Matola.
The project represents the initial phase of a scalable 20MW Solar Power Plant, to be executed in two 10MW phases. It will integrate an advanced battery storage system with a capacity of 2.5MWh to bolster power system stability during intermittent sunlight or unexpected demand fluctuations. ESCOM’s Nanjoka Substation will facilitate the evacuation of the generated power. The construction will be undertaken by Chint Electric Co. and is slated to span 18 months.
Under the theme “Harnessing the Sun โ Diversifying Power Sources,” the groundbreaking ceremony underscores EGENCO’s commitment to diversifying power sources. This includes the construction of hydropower plants in Central & Northern regions, branching away from the Shire River, and exploring alternative power generation technologies like solar, geothermal, and coal.
Once operational, the Salima Solar Power Plant will offer an alternative electricity source, complementing existing energy sources. This aligns with EGENCOโs 2023-2038 Strategic Plan, aimed at augmenting the country’s power generation capacity and diversifying energy sources to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
