In a significant move toward sustainable energy, ENGIE, a prominent figure in low-carbon solutions, has clinched a 400 MW solar project from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam (GUVNL). Valued at around $200 million, this project emerges from the 750 MW GUVNL Phase (XVI) auction process, solidifying ENGIE’s commitment to India’s renewable energy sector.

Securing a favorable position with a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed with GUVNL, this venture is projected to yield 907 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, while curbing approximately 774,112 tons of carbon emissions per year. Once operational, it will augment ENGIE’s renewable portfolio in India to a formidable 1.5 GW, spanning 18 projects across 7 states.

This marks ENGIE’s third renewable project in Gujarat, following the successful commissioning of a 200 MW solar project in Raghanesda in August 2021 and a 29.9 MW wind project in Tithva in 2019. Presently in the construction phase, the project has received Final Investment Decision (FID) clearance and is slated for operation by the second quarter of 2024.

Amit Jain, Managing Director of ENGIE India, expressed optimism about ENGIE’s future milestones, highlighting the significance of this award in supporting India’s energy transition goals, aiming for 500 GW of clean energy by 2030. Jain underscored ENGIE’s commitment to fostering lasting change through sustainable energy adoption.

ENGIE’s vision extends beyond this project; the company plans to expand its energy storage capabilities and innovate in delivering cutting-edge energy solutions to customers in India. Firmly dedicated to catalyzing India’s energy transition, ENGIE emphasizes collaboration with local partners, government bodies, policymakers, and regulators to foster an environment conducive to renewable energy growth.

The successful FID decision marks a pivotal moment for ENGIE, accelerating its renewable energy portfolio development and aligning with its global target of adding 4 GW of capacity per year by 2025, culminating in a 50 GW global installed capacity. This milestone emphasizes ENGIE’s pivotal role in shaping India’s renewable energy landscape, charting a path toward sustainable energy adoption.
