Dubai Unveils Ambitious Clean Energy Plan to Power Domestic Manufacturing Sector’s Competitiveness and Sustainability Agenda

Dubai has revealed an ambitious initiative aimed at revolutionizing its manufacturing sector through a pioneering energy policy, bolstering the emirate’s sustainability agenda. Announced in alignment with Dubai’s Economic Agenda 2033 (D33), this initiative spearheaded by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority PJSC (DEWA) is set to transform the landscape of industrial energy consumption.

Scheduled for implementation starting January 1, 2024, this government-led policy will empower manufacturers, data centers, and agri-tech entities to install captive solar generation systems up to their total connected load. Such a move aims to enable these industries to fulfill their energy demands independently, significantly reducing operational costs while fostering a cleaner energy mix.

Moreover, the policy will grant priority access to international renewable energy certificates (i-RECs), augmenting these entities’ capacity to achieve sustainability goals and advance toward net-zero emissions. By lowering energy expenses and amplifying green energy usage, this initiative is poised to fortify Dubai’s industrial sector, amplifying its competitiveness in regional and global markets.

Aligned with the Executive Council’s strategic directives, the DEWA-led initiative forms a crucial part of Dubai’s mission to bolster its industrial sector, attract investments, and cultivate a sustainable growth ecosystem. At a broader level, this initiative echoes the D33 Agenda set forth by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aiming to position Dubai among the world’s top three urban economies while championing green manufacturing as a pivotal component of the emirate’s clean energy drive.

Speaking on this pivotal move, His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD&CEO of DEWA, emphasized its alignment with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision, emphasizing the imperative role of a green economy in fostering long-term economic growth and sustainability.

This landmark policy revelation coincides with the UAE’s momentous hosting of COP28 at Expo City Dubai, underscoring Dubai’s commitment to a sustainable future and aligning with the nation’s Net Zero by 2050 strategy. By propelling eco-friendly manufacturing practices and energy-efficient production, Dubai is not only advancing its manufacturing output as per the Dubai Industrial Strategy 2030 but also solidifying its position as a prime destination for industries seeking innovation and sustainability.
