In a significant move towards harnessing renewable energy and making it more accessible, the Department of Energy (DOE) inked a memorandum of agreement with the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). The agreement, signed by DOE Undersecretary Sharon Garin and NIA Administrator Eduardo Eddie G. Guillen, with witness Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Hubert Dominic B. Guevara, aims to optimize the nation’s use of renewable energy.

The collaboration comes in alignment with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s objectives to generate 35 percent of power from renewable sources by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040. Undersecretary Garin emphasized that the agreement serves to protect the assets of both NIA and DOE while contributing to power generation for irrigation and local communities.

“This is a commendable achievement for the entire government because different agencies are working together to achieve food and energy security for the country,” remarked Undersecretary Garin.

NIA Administrator Guillen highlighted the project’s significance, emphasizing the repurposing of water rights into multi-purpose use. He stated that NIA is now open to proposals for a “floating solar,” showcasing the adaptability and innovation in the pursuit of renewable energy.

The partnership streamlines the application process for renewable energy service contracts, enhancing coordination between DOE and NIA. Guillen noted that the agreement underscores the unity of government agencies under President Marcos’s administration.

This collaboration signifies a crucial step towards water security and sustainable resource management, aligning with the goals outlined in Executive Order No. 22, series of 2023. The formalized partnership enables the DOE to utilize NIA irrigation facilities for public consumption without compromising NIA’s operations.

The strategic initiative ensures that NIA’s irrigation water not only aids in economic expansion but also generates additional funds for the maintenance of irrigation facilities. Simultaneously, it allows the DOE to offer the public better access to clean, affordable energy sources, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards sustainable energy solutions.
