PM Modi Unveils Lakshadweep’s Innovative On-grid Solar Project Featuring Advanced Battery Storage; SunSource Energy Steps as EPC Contractor

On January 3, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first on-grid solar project with advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) today. Developed by SECI, this initiative covers Kavaratti and Agatti islands, featuring a total solar capacity of 1.7 MW and a 1.4 MWh battery storage facility in Kavaratti. SunSource Energy has provided the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services for the project.

The Lakshadweep Energy Development Agency (LEDA) will now derive power from these solar plants, marking a pivotal shift from diesel-based to sustainable, eco-friendly energy for the region.

Throughout its anticipated technical lifespan, this initiative is projected to yield commercial savings of around INR 250 crore. The substantial reduction in diesel consumption, up to 190 lakh liters, and the offset of 58,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions highlight its significant contribution to promoting green energy.

Kushagra Nandan, Co-Founder, Managing Director, and CEO, SunSource Energy said, “We are immensely proud to have played a pivotal role in this groundbreaking project. It not only supports the energy transition of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep but also aligns with our commitment at SunSource Energy to advance sustainable projects that make a lasting impact and contribute to our country’s ambitious net-zero goals. We are delighted that Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. chose us for this project.”
