PLN Empowers Remote Papua Villages In Indonesia With Solar Power Plants and Battery Storage

In a significant move towards energy transition and rural electrification, PT PLN (Persero) has successfully inaugurated two Solar Power Plants (PLTS) in Samanente Village (30 KWp) and Konderjan Village (20 KWp) in Sarmi Regency, Papua. Funded through State Capital Participation (PMN) funds, these plants, equipped with battery storage, aim to brighten up Disadvantaged, Frontier, and Outermost (3T) areas, fostering economic development and clean energy adoption in Indonesia.

Yosep Uduas, the head of Samanente Village, expressed gratitude for the introduction of PLTS, envisioning improved community activities and economic growth. The installation has already made a significant impact, enabling children to study at night and providing a reliable source of electricity.

Previously dependent on kerosene lamps with limited supply and high costs, the community now anticipates not only consistent public lighting but also the ability to use necessary electrical appliances. The installation ensures places of worship and hospitals can operate 24/7 without reliance on generators, marking a significant improvement in the quality of life.

Acting Regent of Sarmi, Markus Mansnembra, commended PLN’s dedication to providing long-awaited electricity to isolated areas. He expressed hope that the newfound access to electricity would boost productivity and enhance the overall well-being of the community.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo reiterated the company’s commitment to ensuring equal access to electricity for all Indonesians. He emphasized that the PLTS in Sarmi aligns with the energy transition strategy, benefitting not only the two villages but the entire region of Papua.

Budiono, General Manager of PLN Main Unit for Papua and West Papua Region, highlighted that the construction of PLTS is part of the government and PLN’s strategy to provide reliable electricity in remote areas by leveraging local resources. Additionally, PLN is working on a Low Voltage Network (JTR) to enhance infrastructure for improved education, economy, and regional industry in the long run.
