In a significant development, ACCIONA Energía has successfully finalized the construction of its inaugural hybrid renewable energy plant. The newly added 29.4MW photovoltaic facility complements the existing Escepar wind farm (36MW) situated in the municipalities of Villalba del Rey and Tinajas (Cuenca).

Comprising 54,208 photovoltaic modules, the Escepar solar plant is projected to generate 48,170MWh of clean electricity annually, equivalent to powering 13,800 homes. This capacity combines with the 57,500MWh/year already produced by the Escepar wind farm. Together, these facilities will supply electricity to over 30,000 homes and prevent the emission of more than 46,000 tons of CO2 each year – a figure comparable to planting two and a half million trees or removing over 17,750 cars from the road.

The construction phase of the photovoltaic plant at Escepar generated up to 130 jobs at its peak. Furthermore, ACCIONA Energía’s Social Impact Management program, implemented across all its facilities, aims to reinvest a portion of its annual income into the local communities. In Villalba del Rey, the company is supporting the revitalization of the Santos Sebastián e Isidro oil cooperative, a key economic entity in the municipality. Simultaneously, in Tinajas, ACCIONA Energía is funding activities at the Pensioners’ Association and contributing to the enhancement of its facilities.

Escepar marks ACCIONA Energía’s debut in ‘hybridization,’ a strategy where multiple renewable technologies share the same connection point, optimizing grid utilization. The synergy of wind and solar technologies allows for more consistent and stable renewable energy production, reducing reliance on weather conditions. Additionally, shared infrastructures eliminate the need for constructing new power lines, substations, facilities, and roads, thereby minimizing the environmental impact compared to independent projects.
