Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) marked a significant milestone in 2023 with the inauguration of fourteen cutting-edge 132kV substations, boasting a robust conversion capacity of 2,100 megavolt amperes. As part of DEWAโs proactive strategy to address the escalating electricity needs in Dubai, the utility also undertook the installation of 120 kilometers of ground cables, seamlessly connecting these substations to the primary transmission network.
The newly operational transmission stations strategically serve key areas including Al Jaddaf, Nad Al Sheba 3, Al Rigga, Al Hebiah 4, Jebel Ali Port (2 substations), Marsa Dubai, Al Yufrah 1, Jebel Ali 2, Business Bay Crossing, Al Thanyah 5, and Jebel Ali Industrial 1,2,3.
Highlighting the scale of the endeavor, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, disclosed that the total investment for these substations and associated projects reached an estimated AED 1.5 billion. Al Tayer emphasized that DEWA’s commitment to enhancing Dubai’s power infrastructure was evident in the total value of investments, which stood at AED 7 billion for completed and ongoing electricity transmission projects in 2023. This included AED 2.1 billion for commissioned projects and AED 4.9 billion for projects currently in progress, slated for completion in 2024 and 2025.
Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission (Power) at DEWA, shed light on the meticulous execution of the project, involving more than 16 million working hours. The construction incorporated the latest internationally approved technologies, ensuring the highest standards of security and safety. Lootah proudly announced that by the close of 2023, Dubai’s 132 kV transmission substations numbered 348, with an additional 25 stations under construction, fortifying DEWA’s commitment to sustainable and reliable power supply for the city.
