CapitaLand India Trust (CLINT) has inaugurated its inaugural captive solar power facility in Tamil Nadu, India, marking a significant stride towards sustainable energy utilization. The 21-megawatt (MW) solar plant is anticipated to yield more than 30 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually, catering to the energy requirements equivalent to 2 million square feet of office space.
Primarily aimed at powering the common areas of CLINT’s assets in Tamil Nadu, the solar plant is poised to elevate the trust’s green energy usage by over 70%. Additionally, it is expected to curtail carbon emissions by more than 17,000 tonnes and alleviate the need for external power procurement. Notably, the facility holds potential for expansion up to 29 MW, with an additional 8 MW capacity.
Mr. Sanjeev Dasgupta, Chief Executive Officer of CapitaLand India Trust Pte. Ltd., expressed the trust’s commitment to renewable energy adoption, aligning with CapitaLand Investment’s pledge to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions for scope 1 and 2 by 2050. Meanwhile, Mr. Vinamra Srivastava, Chief Sustainability & Sustainable Investments Officer at CapitaLand Investment, underscored the expansion of renewable energy solutions in India as a key element of the company’s sustainability agenda. He emphasized CLI’s proactive stance in executing its 2030 Sustainability Master Plan targets, highlighting the mitigated carbon emissions from renewable energy-powered properties.
CLINT’s sustainability endeavors have garnered recognition from esteemed sustainability benchmarks, with 99% of its business park assets receiving green ratings from reputable councils. The trust has been actively installing rooftop solar panels and securing green energy through long-term power purchase agreements to transition to a low-carbon business model.
The initiatives have earned CLINT accolades, including a 4-star rating in the 2023 GRESB Real Estate Assessment and an ‘A’ grade for public disclosure, affirming its commitment to ESG principles and sustainable practices.
