CVS Health® (NYSE: CVS) has made strides in its commitment to sustainability with the announcement of two agreements totaling 264,000-megawatt hours with Constellation. These agreements signify CVS Health’s investment in zero-emission, renewable energy equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of nearly 1,000 CVS Health locations across California, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey.
Sheryl Burke, Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP of Corporate Social Responsibility at CVS Health, emphasized the interconnectedness of investing in the planet and people’s health, stating, “As our world continues to evolve, these sustainability investments we’re making right now are increasingly important to create a healthier future for the communities we serve.”
Under the agreements, CVS Health will purchase energy and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from Constellation’s long-term agreements with solar projects in California and Maryland. This renewable energy will be matched with Green-e® Energy Certified RECs sourced from other renewable facilities throughout the U.S.
Jim McHugh, Chief Commercial Officer at Constellation, praised CVS Health’s leadership in supporting renewable resources and its commitment to sustainable energy, emphasizing the joint effort towards a carbon-free future.
CVS Health’s investment in renewable energy projects aligns with its broader initiatives to improve global health and address environmental factors contributing to health disparities. The company is focused on reducing its carbon footprint by increasing energy efficiency, implementing water-saving programs, waste reduction, and minimizing fuel usage.
This marks CVS Health’s fifth renewable energy investment since 2022. With these two new agreements, along with previous investments announced in 2023 and 2022, CVS Health has committed to more than 500,000 MWh of clean, renewable energy. These investments are significant steps as CVS Health works towards sourcing 50% renewable energy by 2040, contributing to its broader sustainability goals.
