Kellanova (NYSE: K), formerly known as Kellogg Company, a prominent global snacks manufacturer, has unveiled its commitment to achieving a climate-positive future, including the target of attaining 100 percent renewable electricity in all global Kellanova-owned manufacturing facilities by the end of 2030. This initiative is a part of Kellanova’s Better Daysโ„ข Promise.

In a significant development, Kellanova’s North America manufacturing operations are set to achieve 90 percent renewable electricity by the conclusion of 2024. This milestone is made possible through a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) signed earlier, which secures approximately 360 gigawatt hours of wind electricity annually from a wind farm in north central Texas. This move signifies a substantial step towards reducing the carbon footprint of Kellanova’s operations in North America.

Janelle Meyers, Chief Sustainability Officer at Kellanova, expressed enthusiasm about the progress, stating, “Today’s announcement is a big step toward achieving our Better Days Promise goal of 100 percent renewable electricity across our global manufacturing facilities by the end of 2030.” Meyers emphasized Kellanova’s role as a global food company in contributing to sustainability efforts and reducing reliance on limited energy sources.

Furthermore, Kellanova has made strides towards renewable energy goals on a global scale:

  • In Europe, Kellanova’s manufacturing facilities have achieved 100 percent renewable electricity through the purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) since 2016. Additionally, the company is exploring the potential use of green hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas in partnership with the U.K. government.
  • In the Asia, Middle East, and Africa region, Kellanova has increased the share of renewable electricity from 1 percent in 2018 to 33 percent in 2023 through initiatives such as the deployment of solar panels in owned facilities.
  • In Latin America, Kellanova’s facility in Colombia sources 100 percent renewable electricity from hydroelectric energy.

Kellanova will continue to monitor greenhouse gas emissions and renewable electricity usage in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Progress against the Better Daysโ„ข Promise commitments for 2024 will be detailed in the company’s social and environmental report, scheduled for release in 2025.
