As the world faces a formidable climate change crisis, effective action from energy providers is integral. One of the mechanisms devised as a response to reducing Greenhouse Emissions (GHG) is through carbon credits offsets. This is a tradeable certificate or permit which represents offsetting a set amount of carbon dioxide or the equivalent amount of a different greenhouse gas, measured in tonnages of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e). Companies or institutions get a set number of carbon credits through a particular carbon offset mechanism and with a crediting life cycle, to allow for a continued production operation. To maneuver this entire process can be very daunting for a lot of companies as it requires robust specialization and expertise in order to accomplish it.

It is against this backdrop that Mesama and EKI partnered over consulting services, bringing cross-industry knowledge and experience to aid businesses within the energy fraternity.  This partnership aims to bridge the administrative and market analysis gap by providing Carbon Credit Consulting Services to power plant owners for their projects. To the partnership, Mesama Energy brings its successful record in consulting services and understanding of the South African market, while EKI complements this with its extensive experience in offset solutions which thus brews consulting services that will bring radical change to energy usersโ€™ carbon footprint while creating additional revenue streams for power plant owners.

A memorandum of understanding was drawn as a means of solidifying the understanding between the two parties. It further went on to express and emphasize the willingness of both Mesama and EKI, to engage in efforts to promote their competitiveness as well as activities to develop and expand business relationships. According to the objectives of the agreement, Mesama Energy will serve as a strategic associate of EKI and will assist in managing the entire process including conceptualizing, documenting, and verification as well as issuance and trading of carbon credits. As part of the scope of work, Mesama Energy will be responsible for providing EKI with access to clients and documentation as well as assisting with site visits. EKI will handle the end-to-end management of carbon offset certification, policy and market analysis to evaluate risks and benefits of different international carbon offset standards as well as feasibility analysis of carbon offset certification. It appears that through this synergy approach, minimizing carbon footprint will be a seamless execution for power plant providers.
