In a commitment to fostering sustainability and supporting environmentally friendly initiatives in Lebanon, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities (MoIM) and the Municipality of Nabay, proudly inaugurated a pioneering solar project and business center. Funded by the European Union, the Nabay solar initiative is part of a larger initiative encompassing 20 projects across Lebanese municipalities.
The solar system in Nabay boasts a capacity of up to 76 kWp, marking a significant step towards assisting municipalities in adopting sustainable energy solutions. The solar panels not only ensure continuous operation for municipal facilities but also power LED streetlights, enhancing both energy efficiency and community safety during evening hours.
Mohammed Salih, Acting Resident Representative of UNDP Lebanon, affirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting local government and facilitating Lebanon’s transition to solar power. He emphasized the importance of this reliable power source in providing uninterrupted services to Nabay’s 4,200 residents, contributing to an improved quality of life. Salih highlighted the need for regular maintenance by municipal authorities to ensure the long-term sustainability of this eco-friendly solution.
In response to community needs arising from the current socioeconomic situation, a state-of-the-art business center was established at Nabay Municipality. Equipped with cutting-edge IT infrastructure, accessible facilities, and security enhancements, the center addresses challenges such as power outages, transportation barriers, and social isolation. The business center serves as a hub for youth, students, entrepreneurs, and residents to pursue education, business endeavors, and social interactions.
Taina Christiansen, Head of the UN-Habitat Lebanon Country Programme, emphasized the importance of access to reliable energy for local authorities in present-day Lebanon. She expressed satisfaction that the Nabay Municipality can now utilize clean energy to power their building and streetlights, enhancing visibility and safety at night. The business center, according to Christiansen, is a valuable addition that serves as a collaborative space for learning and exchange.
Stefano Panighetti, Programme Manager of energy and Local Governance at the European Union Delegation to Lebanon, expressed pride in seeing municipalities like Nabay actively engaging in energy transition. He highlighted the project’s role in ensuring the continuity of public services and promoting universal access to internet services, empowering citizens in Nabay. The EU remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to a sustainable and inclusive future for Lebanon.
